The Seattle Great Wheel

Seattle Attractions--the Waterfront

Pier 57

The Seattle Great Wheel

Seattle’s exciting waterfront has a brand new attraction.  The Seattle Great Wheel opened in the summer of 2012 and it literally adds a new spin to the waterfront.

Erected at the end of Pier 57, this is the tallest Ferris wheel on the west coast.  The ride is 175 feet tall, about the height of a 16 story building.   By comparison, the London Eye wheel is 443 feet tall.   The ride features enclosed gondolas that have heating and air conditioning.  Each gondola can hold six adults.

The ride adds another attraction to the south waterfront area which features the Seattle Aquarium, Waterfront Park, Argosy cruises, the Washington State ferries, the King County Water Taxi, as well as restaurants and shops.

The wheel is owned by Hal Griffith, the owner of Pier 57.

The Great Wheel cost $20,000,000. It weighs 140 tons and has 42 gondolas.

Each ride is for three revolutions and will last from 15 to 20 minutes.
