The Seattle area has many hidden gems worth exploring and one of the best and smallest of these is the beautiful Soest Herbaceous Display Garden at the University of Washington. This half acre garden packs many lovely plants, trees, and flowers into its tiny footprint.
The garden’s purpose is to help landscapers select plants that will grow well in the northwest climate. Featuring over 280 herbaceous (non-woody) plants, the garden is a showcase of foliage from early spring to late fall. In addition, the garden in winter is really colorful.
The Soest Garden is a quiet and peaceful place sited at the University of Washington’s Center for Urban Horticulture. It has several benches where you can sit and meditate among the lovely foliage.
The garden is an excellent place for photography. The garden’s vast array of colors, textures, and shapes of plants can keep a photographer busy for a while. The benches and plants offer excellent background for portraits.
After you visit the Soest Garden, you can take a stroll in the adjoining Union Bay Natural Area.
