Gas Works Park

INTRODUCTION

Leave it to the outstanding City of Seattle Parks and Recreation Department to blaze a new trail in developing a city park. Gas Works Park was the first example of a municipality converting an industrial site to a city park.

The city took an abandoned gasification plant that was built in 1906 and changed it into a very popular park. Most of the old rusting machinery sits cordoned off from the public and the rest of the grassy park is heavily used by Seattleites enjoying outdoor activities. A portion of the old machinery remains underneath a roofed facility that is a child’s play area and picnic area.

This park has a lot of things going for it:

I hope you get an opportunity to explore this beautiful park on the shores of Lake Union.
